TimeOut New York - Eating & Drinking 2005
NEW YORK The arepa wars are on: Just a stone's throw from Flor's Kitchen is a new corn-cake contender, offering 17 fillings for the thin, chewy discs. La pelua, a version with shredded meat and cheese, tastes like a South American sloppy joe; the Domino has black beans with salty white cheese. Even vegans can get into the fray, with portobello and tofu mix. Though this tiny, colorful arepa doesn't serve entrées, it ups the ante with tequeños, fried dough sticks filled with melted cheese; and bite-sized arepitas, silverdollar rounds with three fillings of your choice.
